Top U.S. and Russian defense officials spoke on the phone for the first time in months on Friday, with Russian officials signalling their openness to possible new talks. Currently, Ukrainian troops are closing in on the Russian-controlled city of Kherson in southern Ukraine.
The U.S. and Russia released separate press releases of a phone call between U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu, which both said focused on the war in Ukraine.
Austin "stressed the importance of maintaining lines of communication as the war against Ukraine continues," according to a Pentagon press release.
The Kremlin press release mentioned that the two officials "discussed international security issues, particularly the situation in Ukraine."
Before Friday's call, Austin and Shoigu last spoke on May 13, when Austin called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.
